Trying to sort out the Rancich/Silva riddle ....
The Rancich/Silva pottery that is out in the public domain, is more often than not stated to be made by Wally Silva and I would like to take an overview look. I always call this ware Rancich/Silva pottery, unless it has Wally's stamp on it, as by crikey it is hard to work out who made what. Normally every potter has his own style, but in this case the original shapes and their numbers would have been set by Jovan Rancich and Wally would have repeated the shapes.
Let's just stick to the facts for now:
Rancich and Radonich started the pottery at Titirangi in 1932.
Radonich left in 1935, but still retained part ownership of the property.
Wally Silva joined Rancich in 1938 aged 12 as an apprentice.
Jovan Rancich died in 1942. Wally would now be around 16.
Vera Rancich and Wally Silva kept the pottery going until a fire burnt it down in 1944.
Any thoughts are invited.
There are photos on the site that show Rancich and his pots and also Wally and his pots, which should help to some degree.
