Happy Hens - Dunedin Empty Happy Hens - Dunedin

Post  Ev Thu 4 Feb - 17:39

I have spied these intriguing hens for years on Trade Me and they appear to be rather popular, so I was very pleased to find one today at the Hospice shop.  This motivated me to find out more about the Happy Hens from Portobello Dunedin and I went straight to their website - http://www.happyhens.co.nz/index.php
Yvonne Sutherland seems to be a very switched on business person and has been running a successful business making these hens for many years, exporting them as well.

Photos appear a little fuzzy, but will do for now - this is slipcast and the chook makes me smile Smile

I would have a whole flock of them if I could but you hardly ever see them around. Obviously they are treasured, as the maker has a substantial output.

Happy Hens - Dunedin Empty Happy Hens mug with backstamp

Post  Jeremy Ashford Mon 15 Aug - 15:02

Happy Hens mug

When I happened upon some happy hens they were so cheap I had to buy but not to keep. This trademe buy, on the other hand, has a place (perhaps a dubious one) in my collection by virtue of it being a mug and carrying a NZ backstamp. I had already reasoned that the makers of the hens would not actually go so far as to make their own mugs so was prepared to accept what arrived. It appears to be a mass-produced porcelain mug but whether it comes from Germany or China is beyond my ken. Like others, Happy Hens will have bought in the mugs and re-fired them with their own artwork affixed.

Ev,
I wasn't expecting you to be that quick, so I stopped for a cuppa before replacing the bordered image of the stamp with a clean one.
