Olive Jones mug (one of two)

One of my naughty purchases, bought from the the other side of the world, on trademe with the help of hotel wifi.

One of two matching Olive Jones mugs. The other requires repair.

96mm H X 90 OD top x 103 base

The colour is a rich rusty red thinning to transparent at top and pooling to opaque at the base.

This differs slightly from the Auckland Museum one in that the base is completely glazed and has stilt marks.

The comparison had me considering the possibility that it was slipcast (before I got to actually see it) but there is ample evidence of handwork on the inside.

The area of the damaged handle on the other mug shows a very white clay.

Any help on dating this would be greatly appreciated.

As different as our two mug shapes are it is likely that mine also date from the 1960s.
I have received information from the seller that the two mugs were bought new by her mother-in-law Rata Scott, likely in Christchurch and in that decade. Thanks Margaret for the info.

I would guess, only guess, that, similar as they are in shape, the Museum mug dates from much earlier.

The Museum suggest 1940s.

Their mug is taller and more tapered, with measurements (mine in brackets):
110 H (96) x 80 OD top (90) x 100 base (103).

That is quite big for a coffee mug so perhaps a beer mug?
Even my own is quite quite large in comparison to my other handpotted mugs.

We need a timeline for Olive on here somewhere and I will try to find one when I get a chance, or do it myself.
