R A Shufflebotham, painter (Not NZ)
I have been lent this lovely ornate English-made cup and saucer, signed by R.A.Shufflebotham. Our interesting local Whangarei antique shop, Rainbow Relics, found it. The duo is marked Caverswall, which is a small pottery near Stoke-on-Trent. Caverswall is still producing - see this link. http://www.caverswallchina.co.uk/shop/ On the front of the site there is a video showing how their ware is made and decorated; they use many of the same techniques used by Crown Lynn. I have left a note on their website asking R.A Shufflebotham to contact me, but I don't hold out much hope. So far as I can ascertain, she(?) - I say she because most ceramic artists are women - has also worked at Minton Bone China and Durham. Anyway... since Ernie Shufflebotham came from Wedgwood which is also near Stoke-on-Trent, I think we can pretty much guarantee that this artist is a descendant of the same family. Nice.
