KIENHUA backstamp
I had this backstamp translated today....
The Cantonese writing says HUA KIEN
and I was told that the Chinese write backwards ...
so it translates to KIEN HUA. [pronounced Keen Waa]
They suggest that this could be the name of a company.....?
Cantonese is spoken in Southern China and Hong Kong.
Yesterday I was told that Kienhua was a man's name
and that it meant strength.

Kienhua ginger jars
This is a base of a green Crown Lynn ginger jar
It looks to me as if the green glaze had a matt finish and then had a clear glaze applied over most of it. I don't know if this makes sense technically but there will be some explanation for the differing appearances of the green sections.

Re: KIENHUA backstamp
Tony, I am sure that the clear glaze was put on as a base glaze -
then the green was put on as a 2nd coat.
Mine is the same and has runs and dribbles that go underneath the jar.....

Re: KIENHUA backstamp
I've been thinking of clear glaze as a protective top coat - like varnish - but only because I don't know any better.
