Ernest Shufflebotham/Shufflebottom
I notice that Ernest's name has been spelled wrongly in the header for this subject. (Or was I hallucinating?) Although he was only briefly in New Zealand nothing of what he did here has left any suggestion that he was ever known as Shufflebotham. I think this is a recent attempt to rewrite the name so it looks better to contemporary sensibilities.
I think it's also likely that calling him "Ernie" is part of the inaccurate but oft repeated CLP mythology. The only reliable reports I've heard about suggest that he was always referred to as Ernest.
Shufflebottom's wheel and lathe are now with the Portage collection. They'd spent the previous 15 years under a tarpaulin under a hedge in Avondale.
