This is a new one to me ..... it looks handmade, is it?
Yet the stamp on the base looks like it's from a mould scratch

It is quite chunky, but it doesn't appear hand potted, so may be from a mould.

A curious Jar ~ traditional NZ Empty Beach Artware Traditional NZ KilnCraft Clay Craft

Post  Jeremy Ashford Tue 26 Nov - 23:49

mumof1, I may have solved this one.
A curious Jar ~ traditional NZ Tradit10
Left is KilnCraft: Right is Traditional NZ

For sale on tm at the moment is this: http://www.trademe.co.nz/pottery-glass/porcelain-pottery/crown-lynn/jugs/auction-666456842.htm

When I saw it I advised the seller that it was KilnCraft, then realised they had billed it as "Traditional NZ". just like the one you posted above. They added a photo of the base at my request.

I made my remarks on the strength of this:
A curious Jar ~ traditional NZ Kilncr10
H 180mm (top of lid) OD 120mm
A curious Jar ~ traditional NZ Kilncr11
I've seen the KilnCraft mark a few times but it took me a while to translate.
I have no doubt this is KilnCraft.

I have seen another in plain blue (the real thing not just the photos). It is also for sale on trademe:
http://www.trademe.co.nz/pottery-glass/porcelain-pottery/other-nz-manufacturers/auction-666114439.htm
It, too has the same KilnCraft mark.
(I have previously posted the KilnCraft photos and some of the text as KilnCraft here: http://newzealandpottery.forumotion.net/t190-kilncraft#14578 )

Bearing in mind the history of Beach Artware - KilnCraft - Clay Craft my initial inclination was to slip this in after the KilnCraft debacle and before they renamed to Clay Craft, however, bearing in mind the marking is impressed I am more inclined to fit "Traditional NZ" in straight after Beach, giving a sequence of:

Peter Beach (formerly of Crown Lynn) - Beach Artware - Traditional NZ - KilnCraft - Clay Craft

A comparison with the Beach Artware mark can be made at http://newzealandpottery.forumotion.net/t3731-beach-nz#12368 or simply by looking at the picture below. Note that on both marks the "NZ" is oriented top out.

Great sleuthing Jeremy and I agree totally.
Those Kiln Craft pieces will have a curiosity factor in years to come won't they?

A curious Jar ~ traditional NZ Empty Another Traditional jar

I am so interested to see the relationship between the Traditional and Beach fonts. And the lids all have that distinctive hollow knob.  These jars are pretty groovy.. love the blue glaze!

Popping this thread into the Beach Artware/Traditional category even though there is mention and photos of Kiln Craft ware.
I'm finding it a real challenge to sort out these threads

A Traditional NZ hand potted, I think, jar has been listed on Trade Me.

I saw that and noticed the koru under the lid and thought the same. Also the hollow knob reminded me of the knob on the Steenstra lidded jars. The glaze fascinates me too.
