These look like Orzel C100 cups without the handles and much smaller.

The brown "cup" is slightly bigger and the rim is thinner.

Are these also made by Orzel?
The blue cup looks like the green Orzel cup in the gallery.

The blue ware looks more like clay craft. I have a very similar ashtray in clay craft brown. The other pic.... hmmm. Could well be  orzel but not sure. Edit - they do look more tidy on the base than most - but not all - orzel.

The sugar bowls belong to Orzel coffee sets. They should have lids.
May have been reproduced as Hobby.
Stewart made a similar shape too, but clearly different.

The mug is an Orzel shape. See my 15 Orzel mugs topic:

It's the one with the waves but without the waves. I have that one too.

Brilliant glaze!

I love the Orzel blue glaze.

The sugar bowls are a lot smaller than the cups, is that right?

I don't think these are Hobby C.

I saw an Orzel cup shape with the Orzel brown glaze as a Hobby Ceramics. piece the other day in a charity shop and it had the typical all over glaze and three stilt dots on the base. It was a lot lighter too than the original Orzel cups.

Haselnuss, here's the set (without the cups) for the right hand sugar. From:

I did consider the glaze being Hobby. Don't know. Opinion on yours?

Does that look right to you, sizewise?

Val, my thought on that blue was Clay Craft too but the mug shape isn't.
The spottiness in the dark blue is vey like the same in Orzel green, like on Manhattan etc.

The mug is definitely Orzel, I can't say for sure about the other pieces, as I can't tell from here.
Hobby Ceramics always have the stilt marks as they were fired at very low temps with the glaze covering the base and usually initials or a name and a year, plus they are extremely light weight.

Can you take a picture of the sugar bowls base to compare?

Haselnuss, I was just about to say and do the same but you've done it for me.

I still have no doubts about your little pots being Orzel.

You will see an example of the Stewart ones here:

Notice that the proportions are different: the waistline is higher on Stewart.

Are these made by Orzel too? Empty a thickening plot? more on the ashtray

Post  Jeremy Ashford Wed 3 Sep - 14:10

Haselnuss, congratulations on a fine choice of name.
It is more common now but sometimes demanding.
I get "Nigel" a lot. But maybe that's just me.

Val, this may be the ashtray you are thinking of:Are these made by Orzel too? Ccasht10
courtesy of St Johns Market Whangarei

Suspiciously like the one above. Unmarked but Kiln-Craft/Clay-Craft sand glaze.
Note this one has 3 + 3 slots for cigarettes and the above has 3 + 4.
I didn't photograph the bottom but it was pretty similar.
Big ashtray ... 6 or 7 inches across.

Val, our too photos are indeed a match and both ashtrays have 6 slots vs the 7 on Haselnuss's one, which makes them different shape. I do still think the blue glaze looks Clay Craft but as Ev says, and I agree, the mug is an Orzel shape. Something fishy here!

Hmmm yes agreed something fishy. That mug does look Orzel We must remember that in Auckland there was a fair bit of to-ing and fro-ing with shapes... Hemara and probably others made shapes for one pottery then gave/sold the shapes to other(s).
I think my ashtray is Clay Craft but can't totally guarantee it...
Life is full of confusion!

As before but more so:
That mug shape is definitely Orzel isn't it Ev.

So, my opinion, either Orzel and Clay Craft made very similar ashtrays or the glaze is third party. I can't see an Orzel mug in Clay Craft colours.

Val's blue teapot in the gallery looks similar but may not be an exact match.

Are these made by Orzel too? Empty More blue glaze

Post  Jeremy Ashford Mon 8 Sep - 11:28

This auction has Beach shaped mugs marked "Kiln Craft" in the blue glaze.

http://www.trademe.co.nz/Pottery-glass/Porcelain-pottery/Temuka/Jugs/auction-777709118.htm

I think any discrepancy in colour is attributable to different lighting.

I am now very wary of this glaze!

One definite Orzel shape and one definite a Kiln Craft shape in the same glaze.
I will attempt to show these images to Linda ASAP but haven't seen her in the shop lately.

Post  Jeremy Ashford Tue 9 Sep - 15:04

Had a quick chat with Linda.

Clay Craft definitely used that blue glaze.

Some uncertainty about the 7-slot ashtray as a CC shape..

No explanation for Orzel shape/s in the same glaze.

A bit more ...

Just opened a parcel from Janice, almost missed the Clay Craft mug.

Had some more thoughts on this.
Clay Craft, Kiln Craft, Traditional, Beach. I have the same CC mug in all but Traditional.
Mugs vary in size.
Beach: big mug
Clay Craft and Kiln Craft (known glazes): not so big
Clay Craft marked terracotta: almost as big as Beach
New blue/blue Clay Craft mark: big as the Beach.

I think these all come out of the same mould and suggest size variations are from differing shrinkage resulting from differing clay mixes and firing temps etc.

So now I'm wondering if the new mug, in blue on blue but not necessarily the same blues as above, is third party.

I need to wait for the sun for a photo.

I am very, very sure that the top two pots were made by Orzel and should go in the gallery. They most likely with the CS Coffee pot range. Actually Jeremy's sugar pot with lid should go in the gallery and my blue small pot too as a possible mustard/condiment pot.

I have saved all of the photos that you have pointed out haselnuss and will add them to the Gallery tomorrow. As I'm a bit unsure about several of these, perhaps you can point out if any are incorrect when they are in the gallery.

Ev, all the little vases and the small bowl from the last pic are already in the Orzel gallery.

I am just talking about Jeremy's sugar pot with lid and the small little blue pot. The brown pot next to it should be the sugar pot without the lid.

The other pics are just to compare the glaze, the bases and shapes.
