Early mug shapes: Ambrico, 3-digit, no numbers
I've been working on a collection of early Ambrico and Crown Lynn mug (not cup) shapes (and obviously including shaving mugs).
At this stage I am not too fussed about the patterns.
Canterbury Centenary is cheaper than Empire Games at auction and the Fleurette pattern does not make the prettiest beaker, but never mind that.
Apart from the 728 beaker and the limited edition Coronation mug,
what am I missing?
I will check back over the 1949 film as I think there was one there.
Also, I guess there is the early huge earthenware handled "Railway mug" shape.
I'm guessing the Tom Clark mug was a little later.
Later on ...
... I see a Carpay mug which appears to be different from the beaker above ...
... although maybe that's just in the handle ...
... however it could be the same shape as the one in the film ...
... and what are these ... http://img.carters.com.au/202790-tn.jpg ... with handles like the OC Stephens mugs advertised as CL in Carters?

Re: Early mug shapes: Ambrico, 3-digit, no numbers
Sorry for the typo on your name Kat!
(I fixed it.)
Yes, yes, that is it, the very same, thank you.
It has that funny white crazing ... perhaps a buildup of soap?
Scavengers was fun. I will return some time.
Val has one on the blog ...

... but nothing comes up for it with "shaving" on the forum search (just the other one, the 714). Like Val's straw one it too is unmarked. I have seen one with an Ambrico mark on trademe.
Everything else in the photo is marked:
The 714 is (Ambrico) black circle Made In New Zealand, 1943-1950, white body.
(I have seen them with 48-55 marks too.)
(I have a very nice one unmarked, almost identical shape but maybe foreign.)
The 419 "Navy Mug" is 48-55 Crown Lynn Vitrified. (I have a 1960s one too.)
The 844 "kiddies' mug" has gold single star Crown Lynn, 1955+.
The unnumbered beaker is Fleurette Brereton Ware Hand Painted, early 1960s?
The other two everyone knows.

Re: Early mug shapes: Ambrico, 3-digit, no numbers
Similar basic idea of a shape, different proportions, and it has a groove just above the bottom.
I'll put some photos in later as there may not be one on site.
Kat, is your 1286 mug castware? You should be able to tell by hollowing on the inside where the handle connects. Mind you, unless it's hand potted it's hard to think how it could have been made if not cast.

Here are some views of the straw-coloured shaving mug,
plus a comparative picture with the 714 shaving mug.
The straw one is wider and lower, has no cutout.
The straw mug has all over fine crazing but some craze lines are picked out in what I take to be soap residue.

Re: Early mug shapes: Ambrico, 3-digit, no numbers
I have found a new old mug shape that Ev thinks is not illustrated on the forum.
In Gail Henry's second edition, page 202, top photo, second from left.
I proposed the leftmost mug in this photo as the kiddies' mug 844, and it is in the gallery as such. I have one and have seen others on trademe.
Third from left is the 728 beaker. Ev's one is in the gallery.
The new mug shape appears to be a can shape about three inches high, higher than it is wide, looking very like the 728 in the photo, with a handle something like that of the tulip cups. It has a 48-55 backstamp.
Does anyone recognise this mug?

I have the 728 beaker and the Wharetana 1029 now.

Call them jugs, call them mugs: my early Crown Lynn mugs shelf is filling out. All I can think of missing at the moment is the loving cup, the early mug shape as decorated by Frank Carpay, and the mystery mug from Gail Henry's book, referred to above.
I love the little green guy and added this photo partly to give an idea of the relative sizes of the two tobies and the Wharetana mug, which is HUGE..
I do not have the McCallum (too bulky), or the other two tobies but I don't feel the same ambiguity about those other shapes: pure jug to me.
