Biscuit barrel
You are correct. The lid was a cork. Due to the firing shrinkage variations & rim distortions the grading staff needed to "adjust' the cork to fit prior to despatch.
I seem to recall the barrel was designed by Tam Mitchel but it may have been by Bruce Yallop. They worked side by side & collaborated on many projects.
About the same time,Tam produced a wine cask.Shaped like a bladder it had a wooden tap & cork top.
I saw one in an Op-shop just last week.

Appear to have lost my original reply,so will try again.
Thank you for the welcome.
I was at Crown Lynn & had technical connections to Titian in the later years of Fred Hoffman's management.
Congratulations to those involved with this site & I hope I can contribute in the future.

This is a drawing with the 1287 Biscuit Barrel Lid.
Perhaps there were not many made, but it is in the records, so must have been at one time.
