This piece was from an op shop, I was in two minds to buy it or not as it has a few issues but figured that it will do until I find a better one!

Canoe bailer Empty Re: Canoe bailer

Post  Ev Fri 14 Jan - 21:05

I would be thrilled to find a piece like that Thelma *claps*

My thoughts on who made it were firstly Titian ....
as I just loaded a photo of one from doll-finz the other day .....
http://newzealandpottery.forumotion.net/t1429-titian-dishes-from-the-collection-of-doll-finz
the Maori Chief NZ canoe bailer. But it doesn't match......
Then I remembered that Crown Lynn made a bailer in their Wharetana range....
check out the Wharetana Ware Gallery..... 1011
and I don't think it's a match either ....?

So I'm a bit baffled .... but I would add it to my collection any day Very Happy

hmmm, you are right, they do look quite different. Should I consider this not to be CL then? Any record of wharetana-like ware made by anyone else? It certainly has the feel of CL/Titian. I shall do some reading. I think it came from the same place as the funny little square container (picture posted a while ago) with the NZ on it. Pretty sure that is what the store owner said at the time.
Thanks for your input, always nice to have another opinion. Very Happy

It's only my personal opinion, but I can't see it being Crown Lynn. I've never seen them use a mark like that one before. Maybe someone else can help though? Perhaps it was Hemara Hemara using the old Titian moulds? The wriggly W on the neW will lead us in the right direction as it has it's own character script.

Canoe bailer Empty Check the potter's mark!

Post  Jeremy Ashford Sat 18 Jan - 23:12

As well as Made in New Zealand the two eBay items noted above by mumof1 also have an inscribed potter's mark.

The made in New Zealand on all these bailers is very similar to if not a match for same on Clay Craft, and on the Stewart Avocados, so even if not the same hand they are of the same time.

Yes and I agree that they are very similar.
Hemara is so good at Maori Art it is probably his work I reckon.

Post  Ev Wed 10 Sep - 13:52

A bailer listed by Manos today has a sticker on the back ...
Thank you for letting us use your photos Manos as this tells me that it is a Hobby Ceramics piece and the Greenware.co.nz site sell these sort of blanks to be painted.
