Polka by Crown Lynn Empty Polka sold by Sargoods

Post  Glenys Sun 24 Mar - 21:27

Val Monk on her blog says that Polka was sold exclusively by Sargood and Son. Sargood Son and Ewan Ltd was a large wholesaler, selling only to account holders, based in Auckland in a large building in Victoria Street opposite the end of Elliot St. My parents were Drapers and we went there form time to time to buy goods for my mother's shop. (I'm talking 1950's to 70's). I think the facade of the building with their name on it is still there.
Each floor of the building was devoted to one type of merchandise. My parents would only have gone to the floor selling crockery, cutlery, vases etc if they wanted something for personal use.
It was an old and well established company. I especially remember the lift!! A cage, but it did have buttons not a lift operator. It was frightening!
