http://www.ceramics.co.nz/Exhibition/Exhibition.html

It's always a delight to go and see the Auckland Studio Potters Exhibition.

This year was their 45th Exhibition and it's still as fresh and surprising as it ever was.

Rick Rudd was the selector and judge and had an awesome array of work in the show.

I particularly liked the skulls on his new work as they reminded me of his 'animals' from long ago.

The Premier Award went to Duncan Shearer, for an earthy, saltglazed, cracked bowl ...

Duncan threw half a bag of clay into various shapes and sizes... which only took him around an hour!!

Then spent the rest of the day cutting, adding to and altering these shapes into his distinctive work.

He uses salt, anagama, wood and soda firings which gives his work that earthy, warm, yummy look.

Mottled Glazes:

The effect produced when colours put over one another at random run together in a fluid glaze is sometimes pleasing, but beware of overworking this trick and turning out ware which is 'arty'.

Early American potters covered their pieces with a bright lead glaze ...

then fired again in a raku kiln to around 780' - quickly removed from the kiln and while very hot - horse tail hair is placed on the piece. This leaves a squiggly black line mark. The American Indians use this method of decoration and it is quite ...
